True Detective Titles

When I first started thinking about doing double exposure photography for this project, the only thing I could think of was the opening sequence to the first season of True Detective, something that was one of my favourite parts of the show.

Even though the sequence uses moving images, I was still inspired by it when making my own pictures. Everything about the images used in the sequence is so interesting, there are so many hidden meaning behind what images appear inside the other, and many are used as a metaphor for the character’s different states of mind throughout the show. Another thing I really like about this opening sequence is that the more you watch the show and the further you get into the storyline, the more is revealed in these pictures and the more you understand. This keeps the sequence interesting, even though by the end of the season you would have seen it play through 10 times.

James Bond-Goldfinger titles

Once again, I thought of an opening sequence when researching this brief. Goldfinger’s title sequence is different in that it uses projected images instead of combing them in post production. The story behind this sequence is actually really interesting as the only reason that they were done this way was because it was very cheap, they had no idea how amazing or striking the finished product would end up being.

What makes this different from what I wanted to do with my images, is the fact that the woman are basically just a canvas for the more important images being projected on them. For my work I want both the subject and the added images to be of equal importance.

Experimentation

When creating the images for this brief, there were quite a few that I made but did not make the cut.

In these images I tried a different way of overlaying the landscape photo on to the subject, however I found I did not like the washed out effect that was achieved. These images are very much like the True Detective ones, however I did not feel that this represented strongly enough the feelings I wanted to convey through my pictures. When this technique is used for the Title sequence, it suits perfectly the theme of desolation and grunge that runs through True Detective. For me however, my images were meant to be a celebration of the most important things to me. This meant that I wanted bright vibrance and bold contrasts. Throughout this blog, I have made many references to my love of these things, of how I believe they bring the photo more life and make them more interesting visually.

The image i’m most happy with in this brief, I think captures these things perfectly.
